The Blue Seed Bag project was born out of a desire to contribute to the recovery efforts in Japan's earthquake-prone regions. After witnessing the tremendous amount of blue tarps being used for temporary repairs and then disposed of, Sato saw an opportunity to repurpose these materials into something meaningful.
The process of creating the Blue Seed Bag starts with collecting the blue tarps that would have otherwise been discarded. The tarps are then manually cut, hand washed, and sent to a local factory to be transformed into bags. This recycling process not only reduces waste but also gives the blue tarps a new life.
What sets the Blue Seed Bag apart is its commitment to giving back to the affected communities. Fifty percent of the sales proceeds go to the local bag factory for disaster recovery, supporting the local economy. Thirty percent is allocated to the organization's working capital, which is used for events and initiatives focused on disaster recovery. The remaining 20 percent is donated to volunteering groups actively involved in the recovery efforts.
By repurposing the blue tarps into bags, the Blue Seed Bag aims to change the perception of these materials from negative to positive. The bag serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the affected communities, bridging people together through its design. Each bag is unique, bearing the marks and scratches that tell the story of its previous life as a protective covering for damaged houses.
The design of the Blue Seed Bag is simple and timeless, making it suitable for both men and women. Its standard tote bag design ensures its versatility and longevity, allowing it to be used for various purposes over time.
Since its inception in 2016, the Blue Seed Bag has garnered recognition and accolades. It received the 2017 Good Design Award, as well as the Special Award and The Best 100 Award. In 2018, it was honored with The Best 9 at The Kyushu Art Directors Club Award.
The Blue Seed Bag is not just a bag; it represents a commitment to sustainability, community support, and the belief that design can make a difference in people's lives. Through its innovative approach to recycling and giving back, this design serves as a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
